Wednesday is Highbrau Humour Day

God I love The Onion, a satirical newspaper-like beast which works with enough subtlety that ocassionally I am not sure if I am reading satire or fact. They are that good, and this is another example.

"Dane Cook Parlays New Burger King Menu Item into Hour-Long HBO Special"

It doesn't even matter that I don't know who the hell Dane Cook is, or even if he is real. (I checked, he is real , alright.)

This biting account of 'How to write about Africa' made me laugh out loud in places. It reminds me of Wilbur Smith, Bryce Courtney and others whose visions of Africa have been either hyper-romanticised or dehumanising to the majority of the population.

And finally, nerd romance fails again with an installment of my favourite webcomic

Feel free to send me any good links you come across.

Inaugural post

Welcome to the home of smart, interesting and funny stuff from wherever the hell I can find it. I will be posting whenever I get the time, which will probably be every couple of days. Feel free to send me stuff that you think is thought-provoking and intelligently written, whether it be books, magazines, audio or weblinks.

To kick us off on this hopefully successful-enough-that-I-can-quit-my-job site, some articles and sites that have caught my eye.

Steve Pavlina's excellent journal of his self-experiment with polyphasic sleep (where you sleep for short bursts, totalling only a few hours in a 24-hour cycle). I would love to have the time to do this.

This tool is something I have used several times now, and it is fantastic, particularly for planning major events with lots of vendor booths, but even for just moving the living room furniture around.

Whether you have seen this or not, it is an awesome use of the traditional bunraku style of theatre.
"Why is my girlfriend mad at me?" (In Japanese, but knowledge of the language is not needed to understand the skit.)
